1071 Speedo

  1. I have come across a 1071 120mph speedo with the numbers SN4479/22A 1280
I have seen SN4479/22 before but never one with an 'A' after the 22.
The difference is that the yellow gear change point markings are about 2 or 3 mph higher (at all changes) on the 22A as compared to the 22.
I am guessing the 22A was made for a different tyre or gear set?
    Does any one know please?

Change points (as accurately as I can determine) on the 22A are 32mph then 56mph then 78mph. Face has not been messed with.

According to the parts book, it's for a MK I Cooper S with 3.44:1 final drive and a normal (not close ratio) gearbox. There's no mention of engine size, nor the 'A'. Someone may be able to help you with that.
    Cheers, Keith

I have long wondered about the significance of the A suffix.

Interesting that the one without the 'A' has slightly different change points.

I have a 22A, and the change points are as you say, 32,56,78

This type of 120 Mph speedo was also fitted to early 1275's, and early 970's too with an optional 3.4.
