There are at least5 different varieties for the heater valve (not sure whether I still have one of all types to make a picture). What you refer to as the 'straight horizontaltype' is not for Mini.
The horizontal angled unit with small holes in the lever could be correct, but also the vertical type could be correct for Aug 64. I will probably use the vertical type on my December 1964 Cooper S. My 1965 Cooper also has the vertical type. I believe Mini Sport is offering a reproduction of these in their latest catalogue.
Ive looked at same engine bay photos from road test reports from 1963 and 64. The 63 photos of early 1071 ,s show the vertical type with short rubber hose onto the copper pipe going behind the head off to the heater hose The 64 shots including the early 1275S, 974 LOK show the angled horizontal type with the same copper pipe set up. According to the Bible this metal/copper pipe was replaced by a rubber tube mid 64. Sorry i doesn't answer the question, but there must have been a change point sometime, also why change , was there a problem with the vertical types ? More questions than answers I,m afraid. These damn early cars again, dont you just love em ?
Just a quick question regarding which heater valve is correct formy Aug 64 970s.
Should it be the vertical or horizontal variety. I also believe there are two types of horizontal valve, one angled and one straight.
My car came with the horizontal angled unit, I amwondering if this is correct.
Thanks

I think that is what Mark called the vertical type.
