MK 1 Door Fitting and adjustment

  1. OK just been trying to trial fit my reskinned doors to the shell before sending it to be painted.

The doorshave been reskinnedin alumniumand were not the ones on the car when I bought it. The door fit previously was not good particularly at the trailing edge.

Anyhow the reskinned doors seem miles out …….

Can anyone help regarding best procedure for fitting and adjustment please …

By the way I am using new hinges as the old ones were worn .

    Thanks

HI , I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM , ARE YOU USING REPRO SEALS ? AS YOU HAVE TO WATCH THESE AS MOST ARE TO BIG AND WILL EFFECT THE DOOR . YOU ARE BEST TO USE OLD GENUINE ONES IF YOU CAN . AS FOR THE DOORS WHEN YOU FITTED THE NEW SKINS THE DOOR FRAME CAN TWIST AND YOU DO NOT NOTICE UNTILL YOU COME TO FIT THE TO THE CAR BUT YOU CAN TRY AND TWIST THE DOOR BACK IF IT HAS ,AS YOU HAVE NOT HAD IT PAINTED YET SO YOU WILL NOT CRACK THE PAINT . I MUST HAVE SPENT ABOUT A DAY ON EACH DOOR TO GET THEM TO FIT NICE ON MINE BUT GOT THERE IN THE END . ALSO HAVE YOU REPLACE THE A PANELS AS THIS WILL EFFECT THE DOORS ASWELL YOU CAN FIT THE PANEL TO FAR IN OR OUT . YOU CAN FILE THE DOOR HOLES WHERE THE HINDGES FIT TO GET SOME ADJUSTMENT .HOPE THIS HELPS A BIT BUT THEY CAN BE A PAIN ALL THE BEST IAN

From past experiences, pattern door skins are not always particularly accurate dimensionally and can need 'adjustment'. Also it's possible to get the door skin slightly out of alignment on the frame.

As Ian says, you can file the holes on the skin or A-panel a little. If the top hinge then goes too close to the A-panel/wing seam to get a seam trim on you can take a little off the leading edge of the top hinge. Wringing the door can get them to sit flush in the aperture.

If the only problem is the trailing edge you may have to resort to grinding the skin down a little to get a good gap. Then it will need welding up and filing toget the profile. Guessyou will need to TIG weld an allyskin.

Door fitment isprobably the worst job on a Mini 🙁

Thanks for the advice , when the door twists isthis random in how it ends up or do they generally distort in the same manner?

I can get one door to fit ok ish but once the seal is on then the fit is unacceptable , is this due to the apanel being to far inboard? ie not enough room between door frame and door to acccomodate the door seal in its compressed form.

Passenger door is simply miles out with or without seal ….. fitted the old door here and whilst this is far from perfect it does fit and will shut .

Guess I will have to manipulate the new door …… any advice on doing this without damaging it?

Are you using repro seals or original seals?

Repro seals have too big a cross section and do not allow the door to shut, hence why useable original Mk1 seals are in such demand and make good money.

I had door fit problems with the replica. This could have been by fitting the A-panels inboard slightly too much but I'm not entirely sure.

On the driversside I dressed the flanges in a little but still had to fit two hinge gaskets to the top hinge (A panel side only), which does not really notice, to bring the door out fractionally and give a little more clearance. I was then able to fit a repro seal as I did not have a good original one.

On the passenger side, the use of a good original seal solved all the fit problems immediately. The door would simply not shut with a repro one.

Both of my doors were original so I guess you have the reskinning to bring into the equation as well.

I'm afraid sometimes you have to be a little brutal with the doors to get the desired result.

HI , IT IS RANDOM HOW THE DOOR MOVES , BUT YOU CAN TRY AND REWORK THE EDGE THAT THE NEW SEAL FITS ON I HAD TO MOVE/BEND THE LIP IN WARDS TO ALLOW THE DOOR TO SHUT ,GIVING MORE CLEARANCE FOR THE DOOR TO GO WHEN SHUTTING . IT SOUNDS LIKE THE A PANEL IS IN TO FAR SO THERE IN NO CLEARANCE FOR THE DOOR . IS IT OK WITH THE OLD SEAL AS I SAID THE REPRO SEALS ARE RUBBISH AND YOU WILL HAVE TROUBLE . THIS JOB WILL TAKE MANY HOURS OF TRIAL AND ERROR, AS ANDY SAID THIS IS THE WORST JOB ON A MK1/2 MINI AND MOST YOU SEE AT THE SHOWS HAVE A POOR DOOR FIT . BUT I GOT THERE IN THE END . ALL THE BEST IAN

Thanks ….. I dont have any original seals but have 4 different ones I have tried , anyhow will persevere but its all trying my patience but as you said most mk 1's seem to have the lower part of the trailing edge of the door sitting proud . I cant put up with this with the rest of the car A1 .
