When I visited Newtons last year the boss said they had to uselater seats with the plastic handlesas the supply of the old type had dried up. They don't look very good 🙁

2. Hi there,

Has anyone seen recent Newton Commercial recliners for the Mk2 in black.

I recall a article in the magazine (by John Kelly if I remember correctly), showing the seatshave now got horrible plastic handles.

Is this still the case?

Does the seat differ in any other way, and what's the quality like?

Any photos would be appreciated.

Regards

John

“the boss said they had to uselater seats with the plastic handles”
They don't have to, if they stopped using old Metro seat frames and actually invested some money in the product they should be able to make a nice job of them.

Yip wrong frames andFord Transit typeplastic 'adjustment wheel', not to mention the bloody awful smooth vinyl grade they're now using !!! I wonder if enough people complained whether they'd pull their fingers out !? Specially on the vinyl ! 😕

Let 'em know what you think here…

That's why i'm having some exact replicas made, we have had all the plates for the reclining mech laser cut and springs manufactured to the same specs.
Only thing I can't get are the backrest diaphrams, but as they are not seen i will have to make some up.

I have seen NC covers on original seats, and they look a bit baggy in the kidney area, i am wondering if this is because the covers are designed to fit their wider repros?

Hi Andrew

They intend to make a reply to the group very shortly.

Should be interesting!

Hi John,

Yes it will !!

I was tempted to buy a pair of Mk1 recliners for my car until I saw the plastic knob 🙁

Andrew

PS – Thanks for the comment on the car. 🙂

Should be interesting, I also sent a complaint. I've seena new Dove Grey trim set up close very recently and it's a different shade than the earlier Newton stuff aswell as being as smooth as a baby's bum ! :X I've got an earlier green/grey Newton set and it's spot on.

So would I.

Well I'm impressed , the response I got was very swift. They acknowledgeours and many others'concerns that the vinyl just isn't right andhave now sourced new stocks of the correct stuff ! :dude:So fingers crossed the Newton trim for Mk1's should be a whole lot better in the future ! 🙂

No info regarding recliners yet though.

If the product is right, people will pay the money, within reason of course. Given the prices that old brocade trim is making these days it does show that there is still a thriving market for trim and seat frames that are right.

Hi Guys,

Jonny Newton here. I have been following this thread with interest and i will in due course go some way to explain our position and keep you posted on what plans we have this year.

Yes the grain and texture of vinyl has moved away from the original. I explained to Mr Stafford in a personal email on Wednesday (Feel free to post it here) some of the issues a small manufacturer faces in today's competitive climate. I also acknowledge the plastic wheel is far from original.

I aim this year to move back to the original designs and vinyl's where ever possible. It is possible and we can do it, but its not straight forward. The main issue is cost. Our prices may have to go up!

I have just returned from a flying visit to Europe to see a supplier and i brought these issues up and we are working on a plan to sort some of these issues this year.

Thanks for some of your constructive comments.

I have restored many cars over the last 30 years, but this is my first Mini (see separate thread elsewhere). I've played with Healeys, Mustangs, TRs etc – but I'm really impressed with a manufacturer who is prepared to respond so personally to his market. Too often have I come across 'that's what we do now – like it or lump it.'
Speaking personally, I would be happy to pay more for the correct materials. One persistent problem with classic car restoration these days is that all suppliers seem to fight to keep the cost as low as possible. I know, I know – for most people, cost seems to be the overriding factor. But I like my cars to be right, and am prepared to pay the extra to get them so. Er, within reason, obviously! With US cars, the choice used to be cheap and poorly fitting, or more expensive and better fitting. The latter option seems to be disappearing, which I suppose is dictated by the market – more's the pity.

I doff my cap to you Jonny for taking an interest, look forward to hearing more. I'm sure a small increase in price is much prefferable tohaving innaccurate vinyl etc. :dude:

15. imported post

Hi Jonny, As the guys have already said a price increase would be acceptable for an accurate pattern, having watched the price of second hand original trim on ebay it would appear the market is there. However as has been said before on here if it was not for you guys us restorers would have no options available but wait for what original gear may surface ( normally painted black or damaged) at Ebay prices.

Like you all say it's nice to get such a swift response from a manufacturer. I don't wish to add to your list Jonnybut the interior on my MK1 1071 has an early set of Newton frontsseats which blend in very well with the rest of the original interior. My only bug bear is the Newton carpets :(:(.

A friend has a set of Newton Carpetsthat were made over 10 years ago which were an excellent match in terms of colour and qualitybut the set in my car are no where near the quality of his nor the type of material. Is this something that could be addressed.Asper the seats I would be willing to pay a higher price to get the quality and style of the original.

OK all points noted. I will get back to you guys when i have more news

Hi Guys,

Jonny Newton here. Yes we can now offer the chrome handle as per the original recliner. Although our recliner is not the original remember, its our replica recliner. Press releases are in both minimagazines this month.

We also have a feature in Miniworld and we approached them to address several issues that were raised on your forum.

You will see that we were dead honest and explained the situation about original parts and issues.

Reading the article will explain several points.

We have know re produced the chrome handle and we are close to sourcing original mini grain for the vinyl's for the MK11.

I now look forward to plenty of orders from the register!!

Carpets?? I would dearly love 3 sets of quality carpets. Newton last said suppliers too expensive on closest match. BMC interior trim used to make an excellent carpet as did Newton in the early days. I and I am sure plenty of others would pay more money for a decent set of carpets. Come on Jonny :cool:

21. imported post

I need a set of mk1 carpets but am waiting until a good option can be found, this car is costing a fortune so how much more would quality cost? double ? well if that is what it takes,a singleheel mat of the right style would also be a nice touch;)you can sling the handbrake gaiter as we dont need that.

Colours ? I've got a Powder Blue one 😯

I have a set of the defunct British Mini Company carpets in my'60 850. They are very nice looking and very close to the original early Mk1 carpet. However, they are not very durableand tear very easily 🙁

I bought them because I was told by Newton's at the time (mid 90's) that Cherry Red wasnotavailableas it was not a popular colour for early Mk1 interiors. Never could quite work that one out:?

Have to say that I was happy with my Powder Blue Mk1 carpet set (and the full interior come to that) from Newton's though. Good quality and nice fit. 😎

This is a great meeting of minds betwix consumer and manufacturer 🙂

Jonny: Put me down for a set when the updates are in, I was going to order a set soon but I will wait until you guys work your magic. Do you have a ETA for the new material?

Si

OK, we now have the correct early mini grain for black, porcelain green and dove grey. Red is being made in the next few months.

Please phone 01728 832880 or email sales on sales@newtoncomm.co.uk for samples.

When you see the samples and are satisfied please tell all and everyone you know. We will be issuing press releases to that effect soon, but the mags are weeks behind this and other forums and good old word of mouth.

This is just vinlys.

Carpet will stay the same, although we have improved the pile length on all our mini carpets in the last year or so, so ask for samples.

We will never be able to replicate the original mini carpet as manufactuing has moved on and the process is totally different. Most modern carpet is a thiner pile now.

Hi Guys,

We still have a small stock off old vinyl on our shelves, so if you order any new trim, please specifiy new original material please.

Thanks

Funny you should say that Graeme, they were positioned like that for a reason. I used my legacy from my Gran to buy the seats and my folks sent them over. We webcam'd with them this weekend and sat the PC in front of the seats and didn't tell them, took them a while to figure we were sat in the seats!

33. Not sure about the mk1 vinyl but the mk2 stuff is excellent again. The brocade for the purists will never be right because of the gold paint accuracy – it doesn't 'hit' the embossing and can easily be spotted against the original by a discerning eye. But then how long have you got ?! I've been looking for an original cumulus grey passenger side recliner for a year now without joy, luckily I have a standard seat which will do for now. I think if you go for all Newton or all original it looks ok but mix and match not really a go-er (with the brocade trims). A difficult and expensive choice either way, best of luck.

34. I have original standard seats in pretty good condition but they are getting a bit delicate and of course anything but comfortable. I want to keep these and get a replacement for everyday use. The alternatives seem to be Newton recliners or something like a Restall or Microcell copy. I don't know the best way to go.

Why not ask Johnny Newton for some vinyl samples, I'm sure he'd be pleased to send them. The last grey vinyl I bought from there was pretty accurate after they'd sourced a new supplier to match the grade of vinyl. Newton's were also doing a great deal on brocade trim kits at the Bingley Mini Fair recently, worth asking if they could match the deal that was on offer. 😉

Hi,
Anyone bought a set of recliners from Newtons recently? I was wondering what the quality was like now. I need a set in cumulus grey/gold brocade and am concerned about the colour and originality of the vinyl.

i would just like to say i was going to get two new recliners for my cooper just before christmas but didnt know if i should or not .two weeks ago not now been able to afford them i ordered 4 seat covers for my original seats thay arrived monday morning and were fitted tuesday night. they look fantastic. thanks to newton commercial. the new material is a lot better if i could put a photo on i would. this will turn some heads at my next club meeting. big thanks again colin from the aston workshop, beamish stanley

40. brocade

Was the gold in line with the grooves as this was the big problem. If he's solved that then I will buy a full set too. Any photos please:)

41. I went to see John at his factory and was treated so well with a guided tour around, the complete trim I received about 10 years ago is just spot on and it is still like that, it is very difficult to keep up this very old style at the price we want to pay.
