Can you use later ones ?

In my experience all the repro ones are rubbish, I always re use originals if there is anything left of them, same goes for Qtr light seals (but more so).

I bought a pair of what were supposed to be OE door seals and the doors would not close with them. Is this typical? Having to resort to a thinner section seal.:XOriginal seals in good nick are fine as at least they are ready squashed to the right profile!

    1) Adjust the catch out so the door will close.

    2) Shut the door& leave it for a week.

    3) Adjust the catch in a little.

    4) Shut the door & leave for another week

5)Repeat steps 3 & 4 untill the door is flush.

Never as good as a 40 yr old seal though:D

    P.S. I just bought a 970 S and I can't bilieve my luck!!

I somehow can't imagine that BMC went to all this trouble 😛

They didn't,that's why half of the mini's left the factory with ill-fitting doors.

Perhaps the original rubbers were softer, even when new?

Before My car was painted, they asked for the seals,so they could adjust the lip that the seal fits onto.

BMC probably didn't do this either,Radford may have:D

So , thanks for all the dialogue relevant and the irrelevant . The question remains ….. what are the problems in using a later seal apart from originality which to be honest is less important than having some form of door seal as long as it works and the door fit is ok.

NONE Of the new door seals fit anything like right, you will either have to modify the door / apeture to fit them, or trim the new seal, or if you are really lucky be able to work them in by closing the door on them a bit at a time and adjusting the catches as described above.

If at all possible, use old ones.

I had big problems with the new seals on my replica. In the end I had to put an extra gasket on the drivers top hinge on the a-panel which gave me just that little bit more clearance as it brought the door out a little. It does not really notice that there is an extra gasket fitted.

The passenger door was even worse and I gave up with the new seal and fitted a very good original seal which has enabled the door to shut very nicely.

Original seals are definately the way togo if you can.

  12. just purchased mk1 door seal from minispares! looks almost right, a little bit thicker than the originals. Fits well but the door doesn't shut quite flush. I have moved the latch so that the door will now shut without me having to force it and i will let it sit for a week before i re-adjust, as previously advised.

I have used Wurth rubber care over the years. This will help mould the rubbers over time. And you will notice an improvement in the shutting of the doors straight away. Keep coating the rubbers all around.
