  1. This is a long shot, but would anyone have pictures of the Minis entered on the 1974 Lombard RAC Rally. Failing that does anyone know any publications which contain pictures of these cars.
The entry details are as follows

132 Bob Freeborough / Terry Kaby (GB)
    BLMC Cooper S

138 David Cowan / Les Cowan (GB)
    BLMC Mini 1275 GT

148 Henry Hardiment / John Banks (GB)
    Shellsport
    Mini Cooper S

177 Les Birkett/ Tony Blore (GB)
    TBR in Gear
    Mini Cooper S

    183 P Grant / A Jones (GB)
    British Army Motoring Association
    Morris Mini

    186 Keith Gibb / K Yallop (GB)
    British Army Motoring Association
    Morris Mini

    Thanks in advance.

  2. I organised the display of Rally Minis at last years WRC Rally GB, paying tribute to the contribution the car has made to the rally over the last 50 years.
The car representing the 1970's was Henry Hardiment's MkII 1293cc Cooper S.
Henry still competes in the car 353 ACE. It arrived in Cardiff still covered in mud from a class win on the Trackrod rally a week earlier! The car looked fantastic, just how a red & white rally Cooper S should. The original shell, driver and team are still competitive 40 years on.

Send me your email address via a pm and I will forward it on to Henry.
There are recent photos on the HRCR website Historic Stage Rally challenge.

  3. Unfortunately I wasn't actually out on the 74 event.

As far as I know, the Freeborough/Kaby car was generally the same as in 75 (and photos of that are in Tony Gardidner's 'RAC Rally Action' book.

I think Les Birkett's car in 74 was the S he built for the 1970 RAC (which that year was orange with what we now call 'flocked' bonnet and roof!). I don't think it was the yellow 998 Mini with no arch extensions he used on the 71 and 72 RACs, re-engined.

Pretty sure the BAMA Minis would be black. I'll try and get Les Dalton (Army Mini driver on the RAC) to come on here.

At one time Dave Cowan had a black(?) car with white roof and a white stripe around the waistline but that was about 69/70.

Thans very much for your info, I will try and locate a copy of Tony Gardidner's book.
