Ladies and Gents, a quick question regarding the correct grade of engine oil for a 1998 Rover Cooper MPI. I had always been led to believe that 20/50 was the correct grade of engine oil?. Having just purchased another Rover Cooper complete with all original docs including the handbook it states the recommended grade of engine oil is 10/40......? any advise or thoughts would be much appreciated. Thankyou- David

Hi David, this is what the codes mean :

In a 5W-30 for example, the number before the W describes the viscosity of the oil at low temperatures. The lower the number, the thinner the oil and the better the oil's cold temperature/ cold start performance. The number after the W describes how thick the oil is at the engine's normal operating temperature.

Me personally. I will use a 20W50 Semi-Synthetic oil...Get Millers02 from Minispares. Change it every 3000 miles.

Thankyou, that seems to be the general gist from people ive spoken to. My sons 1997 MPI runs on 20W/50 with no issues. Thanks for your reply.
