A couple of weeks ago I purchased this 1997 Rover Cooper as I needed a replacement for the Rover Sprite I sold last year. I've not had much luck with the reliability of the older minis that I have and turning up to events in an aging BMW Touring is just boring.

The car has 38,000 on the clock, and probably the same amount of rust bubbles. It's got the optional single colour leather with contrasting piping, lots of old bits of tree and a cloth headlining. Mechanically it is great, but the body will need some work. I am treating it as a rolling restoration and have already started to change it to my personal taste.

Here it is when brought, with painted Union Flag roof.

And now after a quick trip to the paint shop, a couple of afternoons striping of old stripes (and the glue) and a visit to Mini Spares York for some bits and pieces.

The over sized exhaust has also been replaced with a more sporty looking twin pipe from Maniflow. Next up will be some hi-los and cones to level the sagging suspension.

I have taken a similar step, but in my house the rule is one mini in one mini out.
My 69 cooper S has gone, it was such a responsibility

So I've got a rust free Japanese import. Lots of work to do, the engine is sweet, the body is great, but anything rubber is shot!
The only thing holding in the engine in is gravity!IMG_0526.JPG[/attachment:26ihb9cx]

I love the look of your new Cooper Stuart. The black roof really sets it off. ':)'

Both nice looking minis. I would like a late mini for my daily drive to / from work. Would worry about it being outside in winter and salty roads (the garage is full with the S). What do others do?

Yes the Rovers do have a habit of dissolving far quicker than the BMC/BL cars. Mine will be safely locked up as soon as the gritters are out and about.

Tony, the black roof is right for a red car, I never understood why Rover only painted them white. Next on the cosmetic front is some Gr.2 arches and delux chrome trim.

I guess because it's my first Mini I became irrationally attached to it very quickly!
Nought wrong with being irrationally attached to your first Mini. I still have mine, bought back in 1969.

My MPi was my daily for about 6 months (including when I lived in Belgium for 2 months) and it was BRILLIANT. Apart from watching tiny bubbles of rust appearing. Every week I noticed some minor new blemish and I couldn't deal with it - so it's been garaged now. I really miss driving it every day, but that's outweighed by how much less stressed I am! I also live in central Glasgow, so although it was in a private car park overnight and under CCTV cameras, I just couldn't handle the thought that it might get nicked (bothers me enough on my parents' drive in Kent).
