Help, Which Paint To Use on MPI

Hi All,

As per my other posts (which I must update) I'm currently restoring a 1999 Cooper MPI but I'm at a dilemma about paint.

My original plan was to paint it myself but this obviously has major restrictions as to what paint I use, at the moment I got a small tin of Cellulose, one to practise with and also paint the inside of the front end panels before they are fitted, in an attempt to give it as a good chance as possible on the rust front.

But what was the original paint on an MPI.................anyone know?

I've also had a very rough quote 3rd hand from a local sprayer that is very tempting, but then it would be all my own work.

So what do people think?

General opinion I've had so far is that cellulose is too soft and not original to the car!!!!

All I know is for that authentic Rover quality take how much paint you think you'll need, than halve it ':P'

Thanks Sarah,

But I was hoping for one of the experts on here to answer.............maybe their all on holiday at the moment.

Anyway I've been experimenting with what I have at the moment, cellulose, I had my first go at the insides of the new front end panels and it didn't come out too bad:

Then I decided that I would try the rear wing where a piece had to be let in, one to see if the cellulose would go on the paint already on the car with now adverse reactions and also to practise some filling (which I was trying to avoid the use of!!!)

This the 1st top coat with a 0.8 nozzle on my new HVLP spot gun, wasn't very happy with the finish came out very dry with no shine at all!!

This is another try but with 1.2 nozzle, much much better, but with a bit of orange peel this time:
only trouble is that it's a bad colour match, but not sure if that's the new paint or the old paint has faded????
