Hello Mpi peeps

Sorry if posted before.

I know this is a common problem with the Mpi (possibly some built between a certain date?). Had mine since 8,000 miles and now up to 75,000 but always the same issue of going from 3rd to 2nd. Can avoid the crunching by forcing the gear change rather than letting it slip in which has become 2nd nature now.

Last oil change and the old was silvery and had bits of metal which I assume is from the gear cogs not correctly aligning and the wear caused by it.

I have been advised by a Mini Specialist that though I avoid the crunching the wear is still going regardless and it could get worse if the cogs may not align and meet full on resulting in exit of gearbox from sump and I should get a rebuild ASAP as it's living on borrowed time.

Would this be the agreed diagnosis?

Many thanks

The problem is that the fork is worn and where the detent spring locks the gear is also worn. I would advise an engine out job as soon as possible as the metal swarf you're finding is going around the whole engine and will in time result in your big-ends and main bearings to get scored. Now that will be expensive...Good luck !

Wise words there from Roli. If you looked at that silvery stuff in your oil under a microscope - or even a good magnifier - you'd see that it is the case hardening or hard outer surfaces that is breaking down. This stuff is diamond hard........, and megga dangerous to engines just like he says!
