My rather enthusiastic wife caught the bottom of the cat on a hump back bridge. I removed the cover and it seems to have been tacked over the metal body of the cat. When I looked at replacements they do not seem to have the cover. I assume it's safe to leave off?

I spoke to a local mini garage and indeed the new ones dont all have the plate so I will leave off. 🙂

I think its a heat shield for the underside,it does cut down on heat transfer to the floorpan above it,most of the time they rattle like mad and get caught on things, and leaving it off will not do any real harm,as long as you have a decent set of exhaust rubbers and it is hanging in the correct position for the exhaust you will be fine.

Just had a similar situation. Rattling under the car and thought it was the heat shield so replaced for a new one which didn't. Replaced and found out the rattling was in fact disk break cover which had come away :(.

Oh well I have a new CAT and was concerned about the lack of heat shield but it's not an issue and most replacements do not have them (Minispares sell replacements without). I have a heat protector above the CAT attached to the floorpan but to be honest I'd rather more heat to stop moisture and the rot.
