I just picked up 1 97 rover MPI...not having any experience with these models...have a question...what final drive ratio did they use? (Has the 12 inch rims)

The final drive should be 2.76.

Thanks...I am a MK1 owner so these are a bit foreign to me.
2.76 seems odd now when I am used to 3.44 and 3.76 with 10 inch tires.

The move to 2.76 came in with the change to MPi specification in 1996, prior to that the SPi cars had a 3.2 final drive. The change was to make the car more comfortable on motorways, and it probably helped with drive by noise too.

1990's carburettor Coopers were 3.1, unless fitted with a S pack in which case this was replaced with a 3.44.

The big advantage is that for motorway driving, 80mph is only 3500rpm and you can still hear the radio and hold a conversation. Also 40mpg is the minimum mpg.

Swings and roundabouts with the MPi. The pick up is painfully slow and you want to get into 3rd quickly as that does all the work but having traveled around Europe quite a bit in it, being able to cruise at a good speed in 4th with still some grunt without the engine screaming is a definite plus. Still can't quite hear the radio though.
