Difference between a MK3 and MK4 shell (6 replies)
Whats the difference between a MK3 and MK4 shell? To look at they look the same! Could you re-body a MK3 Cooper into a MK4 shell? Reason I ask is I know the
I'm sure someone will have a definitive answer but I understood the main difference between the Mk3 and Mk4 were the front subframe mountings.
Cosmetically they changed interiors and put in more soundproofing and associated with the latter were rubber insulated subframe mountings to the front panel and toeboard. Ah, and at the same time I think the front subframe tower mountings went over to one large bolt each side rather than two each side.
Can't remember whether they switched from remote to rod change at this point or before.
So you'd have to use a Mk4 front subframe with a Mk4 shell I reckon...
MK 3 shells came in 2 guises - externally identical but there was a revision to the floor pressing to accomodate the later gearchange and I think this happened around late 72. Anyways the MK4 shell is very different in quite a lot of places - The MK3 S always had a round tunnel, the mundane MK3 had a round tunnel early on and later a square tunnel
Rain gutter drain holes and drip bar thingy (christ ive forgot what its called)
Rubber mtd subframes instead of solid mtd
Square transmission tunnel
Single bolt subframe towers instead of two bolts
plus other bits and bats here and there
You could reshell a MK3 into a MK4 but it would be a crap way of doing it and it would look pants , Youre better off finding someone with a couple of early mk3 shells that wants to get rid of one (HINT) and doing it that way

I wonder why they don't remake the MK3 shell if they do the MK4 onwards.
Would also be nice if they re-made the MK1 and MK2 shells, but I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times.

Christ - have you seen some of their stuff - its well on the piss , can you imagine them doing a mk1 shell, the doors would open lambo stylee as the hinges would be that far out
I think they altered the tooling as they went along so that cant go back to making mk3 style stuff as everything was just butchered to accommodate the later designs
I didn't know they altered the tooling for the MK3, then the MK4 onwards, although it makes sense to save on costs
