National Mini Day at Beaulieu Cancelled

by Lorraine Hampson

NATIONAL MINI DAY AT BEAULIEU CANCELLED

Chairman Robert Young has announced today that, in the light of continuing measures to combat Covid-19, the club’s flagship event, expected to attract 3,000 people, has been cancelled.

Plans will now be made to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Mini Cooper in 2021.

“I know that the decision will come as a huge disappointment, but probably as no surprise” said Robert.

“It was with heavy hearts that organiser Tony Salter and I have reluctantly decided that we have to abandon our rescheduled National Mini Day at Beaulieu. When we first revised the date to 16 August in early March as the lockdown restrictions came into place, we were both positive that we would be clear of Covid-19 and things would have returned to normal.”

“Sadly, that proved not to be the case and, with social distancing at 2 metres still in place, clearly to run the event would be impractical. Even if social distancing was reduced to 1m, we do not see how the event could run.”

“We do appreciate that our National Mini Day is still just over two months away, but felt it correct to abandon now rather than delay in the faint hope things will radically change in that time. We owe it to our members and supporters to give them as much notice as possible.”

A decision has been made to cancel this year’s Thames Valley Tour which would have been on the 19th July. Looking forward to next year’s event!

You may also have read the “Chairman’s Chat” and the plea for new Committee members so don’t be shy, step up to the task if you want the MCR to thrive and flourish.

26 April FBHVC DRIVE IT DAY Drive it Day 2020 will continue to be celebrated on Sunday 26th April. This being closest to the date in 1900 when the One Thousand Mile Trial organised by the Automobile Club started from London on April 23rd and travelled via Bristol, Birmingham, Derby, Manchester, Kendal, Carlisle, Edinburgh, Newcastle, York, Leeds, Sheffield, Lincoln, Nottingham, Leicester, Northampton and back to London in order to prove the viability of the motor car.

Currently, UK government are advising against all non-essential social contact. Our current general guidance to car clubs, that can be found on the website at https://www.fbhvc.co.uk/news/article/coronavirus , encourages the cancellation or postponement of meets, events and gatherings of people.

However, there seems no reason why enthusiasts could not take their vehicles out for a drive on Drive it Day, waving to each other from a discrete distance, so long as that drive avoids physical social contact.

NEXT MEETING – 25th September 2019

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

At the Goodwood Revival this year there were certainly plenty of Minis to be seen to celebrate 60 years of this British icon. There was a track parade of Minis every morning together with various interesting displays throughout the circuit, in fact it seemed like there were Minis everywhere you looked.

Not everyone uses Facebook but if you do, did you know about the Thames Valley Region’s Facebook group? It’s worth a look and you may even see photos of your car from the various events throughout the year. Clive has had some new Thames Valley Region car stickers made so you can pick one up at the meetings in Hook.
We’ll soon be arranging our Christmas meal at The Crooked Billet in Hook and we’ll let you know when a date has been decided upon.

In September’s issue of CooperWorld there was reports and photos from our region’s gathering at Hindhead MINI’s brunch meet and also from our Annual Summer Barbecue.

The Classic Vehicle gathering at the Rural Life Centre in Tilford on Sunday 15th September was an excellent event. Several of our Thames Valley regulars took their Minis there and the weather was very warm and sunny for this time of year.

From gearknobs and clothing to stickers and badges, you can find celebratory Mini 60th Anniversary items in our club shop and more goodies are being added on a regular basis….if you can’t find what you’re looking for then please ask.
