Indeed, the Mini has very much moved with the times and it too, is a very different car in its BMW incarnation. And what a success it has proved to be as brand for BMW. But it would not have been so, if it were not for the cute little plucky giant-killing car having captivated so many people’s love for it back then and which has endured right through to the present day. It’s great that BMW seem to ‘get it’ now and has recognised and embraced the quintessential essence of the original Mini and the reasons why people fell for it, and still do, and it’s this that is without doubt its unique selling point. Being the Mini Cooper Register we are not going to let such a significant anniversary pass us by, and so, this year, we will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Mini/MINI Cooper S at our National Mini Day at Beaulieu on Sunday 11th June. It is going to be a great celebration of the car, so do make sure you don’t miss out on this milestone celebration and get your advance tickets bought as soon as you can. Talking of milestone anniversaries, the MCR had its own special anniversary at the end of January this year and that was the 40th anniversary of the first MCR Bournemouth Weekend away. Ably organised by the club’s secretary, Kim Bromage and her family, the weekend was a great success and particularly so in its new hotel venue located right by the sea. Kim and Geoff Bethel have written articles about the weekend which will give you an insight as to what you can expect if you fancy participating in the weekend next year. We have part two of Niall Cook’s article on the Northumberland & Borders Rally. In this second part, Niall covers the night time navigational section of the rally and gives a great insight as to what a taxing rally it can be, not only for the novices, but for the experts too. Richard Pengelly has submitted part two of his four-part article on the development of the Rover MPi fuel injection engine, and in which he was involved with as a project manager. The depth of Richard’s knowledge about these engines is second to none, and I am really pleased that Richard is happy to impart that knowledge to us. Before I wrap up my editorial, I must mention Mike Evan’s The Archive column. This month Mike has been delving deep into the boxes of archive material he now has, and I have to say, that he may have found some real nuggets of history relating to the first Morris Mini off the production line, namely 621 AOK.
