Some Mk1 Mini fuel tanks ( perhaps all mini tanks) have a pick up pipe internally that terminates with a fine metal mesh filter. I would be concerned that this process would also seal the holes in the mesh. The only solution then would be to perforate the mesh by pushing a stout metal wire through it via the outlet pipe.

It may be possible to maintain a stream of air through the outlet pipe to keep the mesh open and I would certainly let it dry upside down to avoid any pooling in the pick up area.
