New MINI has been a success from day one, with over 750,000 cars having been produced to date. The largest market for New MINI is the UK, followed by the USA and then Germany. MINI was released in a “ONE” and “COOPER” variant at its launch, which was then followed in 2002 by the Cooper ‘S’ and the ONE Diesel in 2003. In 2004 MINI released the new Convertible range consisting of ONE, Cooper and Cooper ‘S’ The engines in new MINI range from the 1.4ltr Diesel, sourced from Toyota to the 1.6ltr (Sourced from Chrysler) that can be found in the rest of the range. Power increases as you go up the range, the ONE has 90Bhp, the Cooper 115Bhp and the latest Cooper ‘S’ has 170Bhp. Since 2005 it has been possible to order a Cooper ‘S’ Works 210Bhp direct from the factory. Not only does this car have 210Bhp to make it go quicker, but it also has up-rated front discs and pads as well as up-rated rear pads to make it stop quicker with all that extra power! Originally there were at least 100,000 choice combinations that a MINI could come in. However since its launch 5 years ago, even more options have become available, but nobody has yet worked out how many choices there now are. MINI have retained the 3 Upgrade Packs for the MINI range, imaginatively called SALT, PEPPER & CHILLI; these consist of groups of optional extras but at a cheaper price than purchasing them individually. As MINI is now 5 years old, there are numerous MINI tuners out there who will help you get more from your trusty MINI. So whether you are a young driver wanting the Sound Pack for your MINI Cooper, which won’t affect your insurance or you want an extra 15 Bhp for your MINI Cooper, or you have a Cooper ‘S’ which you’d like to upgrade to 210 Bhp, John Cooper Works produce the only tuning kits for New MINI to retain the official MINI warranty. If your MINI Cooper ‘S’ is out of warranty and you fancy something extra special, why not upgrade to the 225 Bhp kit from John Cooper Works. All official kits are available to be fitted from your MINI dealer. (The Mini Cooper Register is proud to have Michael Cooper of John Cooper Works as their honorary President.) MINI started racing in 2002 in the John Cooper Challenge, which up until 2005 was run by the John Cooper Works. In 2006 the race series changed names to the MINI Challenge, under the reigns of Alan Maynard. The MINI’s that race today have the same tuning kits fitted by John Cooper Works as the normal road going cars. This years Motorshow at ExCeL London saw the very latest incarnation of New MINI, poignantly the last new model of the current range, The MINI Cooper ‘S’ with John Cooper Works GP Tuning Kit. Only 2000 of these cars are being produced, with just 458 being allocated for the UK market. But don’t get your hopes up about ordering one, because all of them are sold already! 2007 sees the launch of the New New MINI, which means the current New MINI becomes Old MINI alongside Classic Mini (Talk about confusing!) I hope that you are interested in what you have read, which is just a very small taster about New MINI. I write an article in each month’s Mini Cooper Register magazine covering New MINI news, tuning detail articles, member’s articles and lots more. I organise New MINI visits and occasionally am able to organise special discounted rates on tuning items from MINI suppliers.
