Repairing or replacing 2003 R53 Tailgate release button/tailgate handle (1 reply)

Anyone had experience of tailgate release button failing and replacement of the tailgate handle?

Mine has just stopped working after recent visit to local hand car wash possibly because of over use of pressure wash on the rubber gasket that surrounds the tailgate handle?

Not sure if I can just replace the switch inside the handle or if I need to replace the complete handle (and probably get it sprayed to match body colour!)

Any info or experience would be useful.

All working again today......maybe it has dried out if previously waterlogged? Also battery flat this morning, so may have been effecting tailgate switch operation yesterday. From previous experience once the voltage starts to drop the electrics start doing peculiar things (headlamps flashing, windows dropping etc).

Have installed new battery today as previous one was 5 years old and had been showing some symptoms of failure over the last few days e.g. slightly sluggish to start.

Interesting that the original factory fitted battery lasted close on 10 years, but last one (Premium RAC supplied) which was guaranteed for 4 years only lasted 5 yrs!!!
