Outer drive shaft gaiters (1 reply)

My '68 'S's CV joint gaiters have split.  The inner joints are original Hardy Spicers.  Is it possible to undo the balljoints and slide the splined end of the driveshaft out of the Hardy Spicer unit to change the gaiters?  Can't remember how the shaft fits in the joint assembly, it's a while since I assembled it all.

Hope somebody sees this, the forum isn't exactly lively these days.  Blame it on the big print??

Thanks all

Roger

Hi Roger.

Yes, you can do that but you will need to re-strap the inner boot as well. Undo the big centre nut, Undo the Caliper nuts and shift the caliper out. Remove the drive flange and disc. Now remove the hub leaving the drive shaft there. Now undo the inner gaiter and remove the driveshaft complete with CV out. Remove the split gaiter and replace it. Take note which direction the metal straps were! Now put it all back. Warning! the inner gaiter has to use metal straps not plastic ties, that's an MOT failure!

Good Luck!
