Idler gear?? (4 replies)

I'll post in this section because it's looked at more, although car is '68 'S' with 4-synchro 'box.

I haven't run it for some time but took it out today to stick some fresh petrol in it, and make sure the new MS roller rockers feel OK before booking a trip to Peter Baldwin for a setup.  When I parked up, I noticed a loud clacking noise coming from the motor at idle, which disappears when I press the clutch.  I fitted a new flywheel, clutch plate, cover and release bearing etc. about 1500 miles ago, and everything seems to be working fine, apart from this loud metallic click at idle with the clutch pedal out in neutral.

What are your thoughts?  Do the rolling road session and think about it later, or do I need to pull the engine and box as a priority and check the idler gear?  The engine and box were rebuilt about 5000 miles ago, but I don't know how idler gears stand up to hard(ish) use.  The engine has SW5 cam, Swiftune valve springs and roller rockers (only just fitted, but I don't think the noise is coming from them - tin rocker cover for clearance).  Advice gratefully received!

Thanks all

Roger

Hi there, mini idle gears do rattle especially when hot.  Presumably when it was re-built you shimed it correctly and fitted new bearings?  It might be worth letting Peter Baldwin see what he thinks (he must of heard 1000s), although I thought he had shut down?

Oh no.  Oh, please no.  Peter tuned every car I've ever owned (apart from the modern junk) since 1976, everything from Jensen Interceptor to Mustang to Cobra to.... you get the idea.  He was only 10 miles away.

Oh well.  The engine/box were built up 5000 miles ago by SMMC, so I can take it back to them for a rolling road session I guess.  The reason I wanted to do it was because I've just switched over to roller rockers which are a higher ratio, so the setup has most likely changed.  They did the gearbox so I'm sure they used a fresh bearing and shimmed it.  There's now a pronounced rattle, though!

Damn, and I've been promising Peter I'd bring him a Mini for over thirty years!

Well, if it was built by SMMC I am sure it is fine.  They have my engine there at the moment!  They've had it for ages, but it's about ready now..  Might be worth taking it there for them to assess it.  A series idler gears do rattle.  Might see you there if I am picking up my engine 🙂
