| Dons Ramblings Kazuyoshi SAKUMA. I met this gentleman Mini fanatic and member of the Japanese MCR when I marshalled at Mike Terrys Chilterns Rally. Just as I was about to leave, following John and Julie Lloyd in their vehicle, to be delivered to my control, Kazu arrived from the airport in a taxi, clutching his luggage. Mike intercepted Kazu, nodded sagely then came over to me and said Don, could you look after Kazu this evening? No problem, he got into my Shogun (which should have made him feel at home) and off we went. 100 yards later I panicked - where was my mobile phone? Stop John and Julie, have a look around car, worry then find Kazu sitting on my phone. Brilliant start. Anyway, off we went to the far side of Henley where I was delivered to the Time Control and we parked. Only two hours to wait for our first car! I know the Japanese for one and two as well as Mitsubishi. Not a promising start. Fortunately Kazu had a phrase book and a good knowledge of English words - which I could not readily understand!!!. We kept exchanging this book and pointing at the pages, gesticulating as appropriate. Somehow, the international language Mini kept us going. Eventually the first car arrived and departed in a shower of stones. Kazu was ecstatic and shouted Good Ruck at each car. Brilliant. All too soon the last car had gone and we set off back towards Rally HQ for the buffet supper. As we started towards Henley Kazu handed me a small box as a gift. A 1/43 scale model of a Japanese race Mini. Very kind of him. I was then motivated to a small detour, which took in my home. Kazu was captivated by my 10 cabinets containing nearly 500 Mini models and proceeded to photograph everything in sight. I showed him particularly the model of the Rally Car that Dave Tippett and I own, then I took him to the garage where the car was. I thought he was going to have a heart attack! I took his picture with the car, he took my picture with the car etc. etc. I would have loved to drive Kazu back in the car but his luggage was impossible to fit in. Fortunately I had one last model of the car, which I presented to Kazu. Rather late we made our way back to Rally HQ, but in time for Kazu to receive the longest distance marshals award from Mike. A lovely and totally unexpected evening. DONALD FARR ダンのぶらぶら歩き ドナルド・ファー 佐久間 一禎君。私はマイク・テリー主催のチルターンズ・ラリーにおいて、コース・マーシャルを担当していた時に、このミニ狂いのMCRJメンバーの紳士に出会った。 私の持ち場であるコントロール地点に移動するために、ジョン＆ジュリー・ロイド夫妻のクルマに続いてちょうど出発しようとしたその時、ラゲッジバッグを握りしめたカズが空港からタクシーに乗ってやって来たのだ。マイクが賢そうに頷くカズを連れて私のところにやってきて、私に聞いた。 「ダン。今晩、カズの面倒を見てやってくれないか？」 もちろん私の答えは、「ノープロブレム。」 マイクは私のクルマに「将軍」（家に帰ってから感じた彼の印象から名付けた。）を押し込むと同時に、我々はコントロール地点へと出かけた。 100メートルも走らないうちに私はパニックになった。 「携帯電話が、ない！」 ジョンとジュリーのクルマを停止させ、車内を探し回った。見つけた！カズが携帯電話の上に座っていたのだった。素晴らしい出発であった。 ともかく、我々はヘンリーからかなり離れた場所にあるコントロール地点にたどり着き、そこにクルマを駐車した。最初の競技車両がやってくるまで待つこと「たったの」2時間！私の知っている日本語といえば、ミツビシとかその類の一つか二つ。決して先行きの明るいスタートではなかった。幸運にもカズは「海外旅行英会話集」を持参しており、私でも容易には理解できないほどの！英単語の知識も持っていた。我々は代わりばんこにこの本を見て、ジェスチャーを交えながら互いに言いたいことの書いてあるページを指で指し合った。 なぜだか「国際用語」である―Mini―に関することだけはちゃんと通じるものだ。ようやく最初の競技車両が到着して、我々に石のシャワーを浴びせながら走り去っていった。カズはどの車両に対しても、夢中で「グッド・ラック」と叫んでいる。カズ、最高！（ダンはジョークでカズの発音を揶揄して、Luck＝幸運、をRuck=しわ、と表記している＝編集部） あっけなく最後の車両が走り去って行き、我々は晩飯にありつくためにラリー本部へと向かった。ヘンリーに向かって出発した時、カズは私に小さな箱に入ったプレゼントをくれた。それは1/43スケールの日本製レーシングミニのミニカーであった。本当に有難う。私は少し回り道をして、私の自宅に彼を誘うことに決めた。カズは私のコレクションである500台近くのミニのモデルカーを収めた、10台のキャビネットにうっとりと魅入っていた。そうして目に入るあらゆる物の写真を撮り続けていたものだ。とりわけ、私とデイブ・ティペッツが所有していた―その後、その車両が保管してある彼のガレージへカズを連れて行ったのだ―ラリーカーを見せた。彼はほとんど心臓が止まりそうになっていたと思う！ 私はその車両とカズを写真に収め、次にはカズが私の写真を撮り、と大忙し。彼を乗せてドライブしたかったが、カズのラゲッジバッグが大き過ぎて断念。幸いにもその車両のモデルカーが1台残っていたので、これをカズへのプレゼントにした。ラリー本部に戻るのが多少遅れてしまったが、カズはマイクから何と、「遠来マーシャル賞」を受賞してしまった。 実に素晴らしい、予期せぬ一夜であった。 （このラリーカーとは何と、1994年のチャレンジ・モンテカルロラリーに出場したマシンそのもの＝佐久間氏後日談） |
